How to clean window blinds fast
Window blinds collect dust and debris quite easily, and they aren’t the easiest household item to clean. Sometimes a quick wipe with a sponge will do, but a few times
a year it’s best to take blinds down and wash them properly to keep them looking new. Read this article for information on how to clean Venetian blinds, mini blinds,
or vertical blinds using a variety of methods.
There’s really no one best way to clean blinds. The methods and tools you use for cleaning blinds will depend on how much dust has accumulated or how soiled they
are. Regardless of what your blinds are made of, you’ll want to assemble the following items:
- Vacuum cleaner with attachment
- Microfiber cloths or a microfiber mini blind duster (You can find this online or at a local hardware store. It’s a great tool because it covers multiple blind tiers at one time.
Simple Blind Cleaning
Leave your blinds in place to dust them. Just open the blinds and clean them from the top to the bottom with a lambswool or other type of duster. Use a vaccum
cleaner to get up any dust that drifts onto the floor. Shake the duster outside, between cleanings, if you’re doing more than one set of blinds.
To use a microfiber cloth, close the blinds and wipe off the dust, again working from the top to the bottom. The cloth will catch most of the dust. When it gets dirty,
take it outside and shake it vigorously, or switch to a clean cloth.
How to Clean Blinds That Are Heavily Soiled
If it’s been years since you last tackled this project, those blinds are probably going to need a little extra TLC. Again, be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions before diving in.
This method should only be used on metal, plastic, or mini blinds. Start by filling up the bathtub with about 4-inches of warm water. Mix in a little dish soap,
a little white wine vinegar, and a little baking soda. Remove the blinds from the window and lower them into the water until they are fully covered.
Soak for about 1 hour, then use a sponge to scrub away any dirt and grime. Drain the tub and rinse the blinds with fresh water.
Lift the blinds and let the water drip off. Dry completely with a soft cloth and re-hang blinds.
How to Clean Wood Blinds
When cleaning your blinds, you’ll want to avoid using water. Excess moisture can hurt the finish, crack the wood or warp the slats.
If your blinds are especially dirty and you have to use water, then use a slightly damp soft cloth followed by a dry towel to soak up the moisture quickly.
Make sure the blinds are in a dry environment so that the water evaporates off the slats quickly.
To preserve the wood finish, mix one cup of hot water and two tablespoons of lemon oil. Apply with a slightly damp soft cloth and wipe off the excess with a dry towel.
When washing your windows, try to keep window cleaner and other chemicals from making any contact with the wooden slats.
Chemicals can tarnish the wood finish and age the blinds more quickly. One way to prevent the chemicals from touching the cloth is to spray the window cleaner
onto a towel instead of onto the window.
